In June 2005 we began the fine-scale analysis of key areas in British Columbia. We visited the areas which our broad-scale modeling had indicated to be key core and corridors for wildlife. The site visits, together with discussions with stakeholders and broad-scale mapping results guided our decision to focus initially on 4 areas of connectivity around a large core area that is centered on Wells Gray Provincial Park.
One of the areas we feel is most critical for connectivity is the 'corridor' across the Thompson River south of the town of Clearwater. This region connects the Wells Gray Core with the Big Bend Core through rugged country with many small lakes that drops down into the Thompson River Valley. There is much more development in this area than in the corridor north of Clearwater.
CERI began the process to acquire many of the necessary data layers beginning in July after examining BC data to find data sets that are most compatible across the border. We have requested BC government data: FIP and VRI datasets for the Forest Districts that we wish to work in initially.
This fine-scale project area is part of the 100-Mile House, Central Cariboo and the Kamloops Forest Districts.
