Lance completed a Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Dr. Joseph Hickey in 1977 on: "A census of Pribilof Island Seabirds".  He worked for the next ten years primarily in Alaska. He completed a PhD at Montana State University under Drs. Ernie Vyse and Peter Brussard in 1994.  His dissertation topic was "Conservation Genetics of Grizzly Bears", and was conducted in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  Lance is currently an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Biology at Montana State University.  He has published two book chapters: one in “Metapopulations and Wildlife Conservation” edited by Dale McCullough for Island Press, the other in “Carnivores in Ecosystems” edited by Tim Clark, Peter Kareiva, and Steven Minta for Yale University Press.  He wrote a popular book; Bears of the World for Voyageur Press, published in November 2000.

  • RESEARCH INTERESTS

I have worked as a volunteer, graduate student, consultant, and employee in a variety of research positions. Most of my research experience has been with birds (particularly seabirds and raptors) and large mammals (particularly grizzly bears and other carnivores). My current interests concern population genetics, DNA analysis, and landscape ecology using GIS, all with an emphasis on conservation and reserve design. In my present capacity as Scientific Coordinator for American Wildlands I am helping design and direct a GIS-based analysis of wildlife movement corridors between the large wilderness reserves in the Montana Rockies: The Corridors of Life Project

As affiliate professor at Montana State University I am involved in ongoing genetic research with grizzly bears and other species, and serve on PhD candidate graduate committees.
