The Craighead Environmental Research Institute (CERI) is focused primarily on the conservation of carnivores and their habitats, because of their status as "umbrella" species and their relatively high sensitivity to humans. Of all our native wildlife, bears, wolves, cougars, wolverine, lynx and other carnivores have the greatest need for large areas of relatively undisturbed habitat. So, by developing conservation plans for these predators, CERI is also helping the majority of other animal and plant species, which need less wild country to survive. And by focusing on carnivores, we address the most pressing issues of how people can best coexist with wildlife that are affected by our activities.
The Craighead Environmental Research Institute's geographic focus is in the Yellowstone-to-Yukon and Coastal Rainforest regions of North America. The Rocky Mountains of the western United States and Canada, and the coastal forests of British Columbia and Alaska, are still home to the full complement of animals that have lived there since the Ice Age. CERI believes these two areas hold some of the highest conservation potential in North America and should be managed as mega-reserves for biodiversity. Yet, because of their great resources, these lands are also being developed at alarming rates - which is why we have placed our priority on working in these two regions.
The Craighead Environmental Research Institute believes that people can coexist with intact wild ecosystems, and we are confident our efforts will continue to play a key role in helping resource managers and conservationists develop conservation plans that benefit all species - including people.
