Most of this area is outside the range of recent historic records of
Grizzly Bears although they may have been here during the Pleistocene.
Grizzly range extended to the western edge of Manitoba and south through
Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas; down into the highlands
of Mexico (Bjorklund 1978, USFWS 1982). Scattered fossil records also exist
east of this boundary in Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Ohio and Kentucky
(Elton 1954, Guiliday 1968).
Grizzlies were historically found in Saskatchewan and Manitoba in portions
of three biogeoclimatic zones ("grizzly bear zones" Banci et.
al. 1994): the Glaciated Prairies, Non-Mountainous Boreal Plains, and theTaiga
Shield.
