The last grizzly in New Mexico was killed in 1931. This was also the year in which the last grizzly in Oregon was killed (Murray 1992, page 236).
Grizzly distribution was centered in west-central New Mexico in the Mogollon, Tularosa, San Francisco,
Saliz, Gallo, Pinos Altos, Datil, Gallinas, Magdalena, San Mateo and the Black Range Mountains. They were also reported from the Guadalupe, Sacramento, and El Capitan Mountains, and in the southern corner of the state near the Sonora-Chihuahua border in the
Peloncillo, San Luis, Animas Mountains. Records are either from montane habitats or major riparian areas (Brown, 1985).
