North American Grizzly Population Sizes

and details of

Canadian Grizzly Population Sizes

This is a clickable map which links to recent information on status, distribution, and trends for states and provinces that currently have grizzly bear populations. It also reports historic data (such as date of local extinction) for those states that no longer have grizzly bears.

This map and the linked pages report estimated numbers and distribution. These are based upon the best available research and surveys and are subject to uncertainty: grizzly bears are difficult to find and to census. This data is presented to indicate relative abundance throughout their range and the approximate limits of known distribution. The exact number of bears is not as important as the "effective size" of the population or the amount of good habitat that is available.

Canadian Grizzly Population Sizes

are summarized here. Arctic/Barren Ground grizzly populations are probably stable. Grizzlies are declining elsewhere in Canada and will soon be restricted to protected Parks and Reserves as they are in the Lower 48 States.
